A wonderful tree planting event took place on 12th March. Part of the grant funding from the Coronation Living Heritage Orchard fund, which celebrates the coronation of King Charles III, enabled us to purchase five trees to create a small orchard in The Close.

The saying is that you plant trees for future generations, so the first tree was planted by a group of children from the village pre-school, the next was planted by Hedley White who is in his nineties and has lived in Pitton all his life.

One of the trees was planted by Carole Smith, a regular volunteer for the charity, who has undertaken numerous flora and fauna surveys for us.

We were pleased that Sarah Ackrill, the chair of Pitton & Farley Parish Council was able to join us and plant a tree. The Close belongs to the Parish Council and is managed by the charity to create a wildflower and nature habitat.

The final tree was planted in a hailstorm by some of the PNT trustees.

The trees planted were; a crab apple, Malus Jelly King which will be suitable for crab apple jelly; Fiesta a late eating apple, Concorde pear which is another late eater and two cherries, Stella a mid season eater and Sweetheart which is a late eater.
It will take a while for the trees to start fruiting, but when they are ready for picking we will hold events and share the produce within the community.
